The Aurora Blanket

The Aurora Blanket by Susan Carlson of Felted Button is featured in the April 2018 issue of Happily Hooked Magazine. Exquisitely designed, this blanket uses the Aurora Collection from Schjeepes Whirl.

These cake yarns go from a bright color in the center lightening to grey and then to black around the outside. It is a very long gradient, 1000 meters, and so the color change is slow, yet striking.

Felted Button’s Aurora Blanket combines four Whirl cakes together in long strips. Three of the 4 strips are worked in a long panel, the fourth is worked in several square motifs. I began one long strip and loved it so much that I wanted to make a scarf out of it. I made one motif and continued to make it larger for a baby blanket for a friend with a baby due soon. So then I went back shopping specifically for the first cake for my Aurora Blanket, determined to not get distracted by this incredibly versatile pattern. The blanket is lovely, the scarf is gorgeous with just the right drape. This blanket isn’t gauge sensitive and I think that creating a panel with a heavier weight cake yarn, such as Lion Brand Mandala, would be a nice warm blanket for winter.

For now, however I’m so content to make this lovely, summery blanket is gorgeous colors!

Happy crocheting!
