A Love Letter to Yarn

“I will always buy extra yarn. I will not try to tempt fate.” – Stephanie Pearl-Mcphee

When I was a young boy I didn’t like sports or television or video games. I spent most of my time reading and studying. I wanted to be President one day.

In the summer of 1998 or so, the dates are a bit foggy, I walked to my local library in my small town. Now, I can’t stress what a big deal this was. You see, I lived in a small town that barely had enough money to keep the traffic lights on. The library was open once or twice a week for a few hours. It was completely volunteer-run and was just one room.

On the right of the library was fiction, where I spent most of my childhood. On this day, however, I walked to the card catalog (they still use it today) and searched for a book on crochet.

Now, I’d never crocheted and had no idea if I’d like it. For the life of me I cannot remember why I chose crochet but it was in my bones, I guess.

I picked up an aged copy of the Better Homes and Gardens Treasury of Needlecrafts. You can still find it here and there if you look hard enough.

In it, I found a world of which I wanted to be a part. Within a few days, I took the $25 I made from mowing lawns and, while my mother was doing our weekly grocery shopping a few towns over, I bought a book, a hook, and skein of Red Heart Super Saver. As soon as I arrived back home I ran to my room and tried to follow the terrible illustrations and photos in the book. It was a mess.

But, it changed my life.

Within a few weeks I’d found Carol Duvall. The craft queen. The Martha Stewart before Martha Stewart. She inspired me to teach, to craft, and to be a part of the craft community. Funny story…she would end up retiring about an hour from where I grew up. Imagine that? I guess it was fate all along.

Crocheting is a part of who I am. Whether that’s working for Happily Hooked or designing crochet socks…it’s ingrained in my DNA. So, this is my love letter (of sorts) to crochet and to yarn.

Happy Monday y’all!
