Book Review – My Crocheted Closet by Salena Baca

My Crocheted Closet is a curated collection of patterns from 13 of today’s most talented crochet designers. The book includes 22 patterns that will fill your closet with gorgeous sweaters, skirts, tops, hats, accessories, and more. I love how each design is so versatile and you could take any one of these pieces with you on a casual outing to complement your wardrobe, or out to a dressy occasion. I can’t say enough good things about all of the amazing designs included in the book and you’ll love each one.

Most of the books that I review begin as I receive a book in the mail and browse the pages. I, then, choose a project to make and give my opinion. My Crocheted Close by Salena Baca is different though. The previous Happily Hooked Editor, Danyel, and I tech-edited every pattern in this book. I saw each pattern as every designer turned in their work. I worked several swatches to check stitch counts and proofed every pattern to make sure directions were clear, concise, and accurate. As I tech-edited, I envisioned each stunning project and was very excited to see the end result because every pattern included in this collection is breathtaking.

I remember when Salena took all of the samples to her photographer and we saw the photos for the first time all together. It was an amazing collection. It was so exciting to see this project come to completion and have the finished book in my hands as it released in November 2017.

Even though I had tech-edited the patterns inside this book, I wanted to make a finished project and show you. I chose the Svelte Slouch by designer Viktoria Gogolak as my project. She designed this hat with Lion Brand LB Collection Superwash Merino, a DK weight yarn which is a wonderful choice for a super soft, comfy slouch. I am slightly obsessed with color changing yarn and came across some Red Heart Unforgettable in my stash. It is technically a worsted weight but fairly lightweight yarn and my gauge was correct so I chose the cappuccino colorway. I love how clearly the pattern was written. One of the things that I love about patterns is when I can begin them with all of the correct counts and then put the pattern down and mindlessly crochet and relax. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good challenging pattern, but repetitive patterns are my relaxation. This one was perfect to work on while my family left for a little winter break cruise to Mexico. A gorgeous book, lovely yarn, ocean waves, and a warm breeze made crocheting outside on my balcony a dream come true!

The table of contents begins with a color photo of every gorgeous pattern included in the book. You can find the rest of the patterns available at the Ravelry source HERE. The yarn choices were amazing, yet obtainable, which is always a good thing! Many of the patterns come from Lion Brand, Red Heart, Knit Picks or WEBS (yarn.com). There is a wide variety of quicker projects using a skein or two all the way up to large sweaters and tops to get you content for more hours. You’ll also find a wide range of yarn weights used. Yarns range from 0 weight, lace, to 6 weight super bulky! A few of the patterns are rated easy in this book, however, it is catered more for the intermediate crocheter.

My Crocheted Closet is a must-have for any crochet library. It is full of classic this one two thumbs up! Find it on Amazon HERE.

Happy crocheting!
