I have known Jennifer Dougherty, of Crochet by Jennifer, for several years now and I am so excited to be able to hold her new book, Crochet Style in my hands. I have been crocheting Jennifer’s patterns for over five years and each time that I need to crochet a gift, I always choose one of her designs for the recipient because they are timeless pieces.
Jennifer is known for her use of texture and her classic designs and this book does not disappoint. When it arrived in my mailbox, I skimmed through the pages amazed at the beautiful designs and I wanted to make everything inside. I spent no less than an hour deciding which project to work up first because everything looks so beautiful. I finally settled on the Spiral Herringbone Beanie when my youngest son said he wanted the hat. And speaking of my four-year-old, the patterns in this book come in numerous sizes! Most of the hats come in at least 5-6 sizes. Accessories such as mittens, boot cuffs, and ear warmers each have about five sizes included. I always appreciate multiple sizes in patterns, and most books only include one size for each pattern.
The patterns included in this book mostly use worsted weight and bulky weight yarns. Several samples used Lion Brand Wool Ease which is readily available at your local Joann’s or on the Lion Brand Website. Lion Brand Wool Ease Chunky and Big Twist Chunky, are used for bulky #5 patterns and a few patterns use super bulky yarn. Each pattern begins with a comprehensive “about” page which includes all the pertinent information needed to successfully complete the project. Stitch abbreviations are listed and a color-coded sizing chart with finished measurements is included. You’ll see notes, special techniques, and gauge checkpoints throughout the pattern. In total, there are over 30 patterns split into three categories: Trendy & Urban, Casual & Sporty, and Classic & Timeless. I am now trying to decide which patterns to make next and I am keeping these for me! I especially love the Powder Puff Slouch, the Summit Cowl, and the Gridlock Beanie.
I have seen first hand, the extensive testing process through which Jennifer puts her patterns. She tests them rigorously for errors, typos, and for fit before publication so you know that a pattern with her name on it is practically perfect in every way. You can feel confident that your projects will fit properly (always remember to check your gauge!) and you won’t encounter any errors.
And lastly, Jennifer’s photographer April from Appletree Photography is incredibly talented. Every photo is gorgeously composed and showcases the patterns brilliantly. Browsing through this book is also a great chance to meet Jennifer and her family since they are the beautiful models that you see throughout the pages.
