Given the state of 2020, we figured we could all use some fresh air. So, we asked designers to submit their outdoor-inspired designs …
… And we were blown away by the inspiration! This issue may contain our most diverse array of patterns yet! You’re sure to find something inside that you just have to make.
Without further ado:
A sneak peek at 6 of the patterns inside our Great Outdoors issue!
1. The Dumpster Fire Hat by Shawna Underwood

This little cutie pie would look adorable in anything, but this hat is amazing! Great outdoor pattern, Shawna!
This hat is named after the colorway of yarn used to design it — The Lemonade Shop Mighty Sock #2 fine weight yarn in the colorway Dumpster Fire.
This unisex hat is an INTERMEDIATE level pattern … but with the support of the Happily Hooked team, can be a great way for beginners to expand their skills!
2. The Lace Tent by Heidi Hengel Neiling

Perfect for a warm, sunny afternoon of outdoor reading or more hooking!
You can make this stunning, crowd-pleasing design using a #4 weight cotton yarn such as Peaches & Creme or Lily Sugar‘n Cream. You’ll also need four 6-foot long dowels at least 1-inch in diameter.
While this gorgeous tent is certainly a PROJECT … the ADVANCED skill level rating is more about the overall project than it is about the hooking. If you’ve got foundational art skills, you should definitely consider this design accessible to you.
3. Wild Hepatica Motif by Chris Allred

This pattern screams color and it's a perfect pick-me-up!
Stashbusting, customizable, fun … this motif has it all. This is the sort of pattern that gives you wings. Once you memorize the motif and join-as-you-go method, you can make anything.
I’m envisioning shawls, baby blankets, window valances — the sky’s the limit.
The original design uses DK weight yarn, but ultimately you can use any yarn size you want to create whatever your imagination can come up with!
4. The Free Mountain Tapestry by Jessica Fishman

This bright graphic tapestry makes us long for the outdoors!
Bring the outdoors inside with this beautiful mountain tapestry! This is rated EASY and is a great introduction to color-work.
It’s made from worsted weight yarn — the design calls for Vanna’s Choice, but any #4 weight will work.
5. The Ruffle Pincushion by Therese Eghult

These sweet pincushions are perfect little flowers of joy!
A pattern like this is destined to be popular. It’s small and delicate, super cute, and a great quick-make design.
Made from #2 weight cotton yarn, these pincushions work up quickly and make beautiful gifts or craft fair inventory.
6. Sunshine On My Shoulder Bag by Hillary Thompson

We're not ready to let summer go with THIS gorgeous bag! Not by a longshot!
Market bags and sunflowers … two sure symbols of summertime outdoors!
This design uses worsted weight cotton yarn (Lily Sugar’n Cream or Peaches & Creme are good choices). It’s easy, cute, and makes a great gift!

At some point, I was supposed to grow up ... but so far I still spend most of my time playing with books, paper, and yarn. In my mind, I live a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. My crochet speed is 1 beanie per 2 episodes of The Mandalorian. I'm beyond grateful to work with the team at Happily Hooked, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me!
