If you’re anything like me, then crochet will be a big part of that.
January’s new issue of Happily Hooked is called SUNRISE — a perfect theme for what we hope will be the dawn of a better year.

A sneak peek at 5 of the patterns inside our Sunrise issue!
1. The Rainbow Starlight Blanket by Krisztina Anna Matejcsok-Edomer
This blanket is a burst of color that is sure to make you smile. The pattern itself is addictive and easy to follow. It’s rated Intermediate for some specialty stitches, such as the extended front post double crochet and the cluster stitch. However, if you’re an enterprising beginner ready to expand your skills, this blanket pattern could be the perfect project!
You can choose soft tones in a DK weight or baby yarn for an amazing baby shower gift. Or up the size using worsted weight yarn for a lovely couch throw or housewarming gift.
2. The Sunrise Mountains Wall Hanging by Pilar Juan
This gorgeous tapestry is created in #2 or sport weight cotton yarn. For the most part, the stitchwork is basic, but it’s labeled Intermediate due to the color changes. However, if you’re ready to expand your skills, this is a great project to practice changing colors.
You can find helpful videos here and here.
And when you finish, you’ll have a lovely wall-hanging perfect for your own home or someone else’s. There’s nothing quite as refreshing as enjoying a sunrise, and now you can immortalize your favorite sunrise colors in yarn!
3. The Solar Flare Tunisian Shawl by Aklori Designs
Whether you love Tunisian crochet or are ready to expand your skills and give it a first try, this shawl is the pattern for you!
You make it using 4-ply fingering weight yarn. You’ll want to choose a yarn you find pleasant to the touch, and that results in a good drape. Grab your size 8 Tunisian hook and cable, and get ready to make this gorgeous shawl!
4. Ronnie the Rooster by Beardie and Blondie
The latest in a long line of adorable Beardie and Blondie amigurumi patterns, Ronnie the Rooster is here to usher in the sunrise! He has his morning paper tucked under his wing, and he’s ready to greet the day — after a cup of coffee, of course.
Ronnie is made from DK weight yarn, but of course, you can use yarns of different sizes and textures to create a Ronnie in different sizes and textures.
Advanced beginners, approach with confidence. Amigurumi is mostly the single crochet stitch. You just have to make sure to maintain a consistent tension and follow the directions closely.
5. The Helen Sweater by Marissa Kessler
Zoom in and look at the tight-knit weave of this pattern. That comes from the linked double treble crochet. The result is a knit-like fabric that looks almost store-bought and a warm and durable garment you’re sure to love.
Though the pattern is rated Intermediate, be extra sure to read the notes and master the special stitches before diving in.
You’ll need super-fine (#1) weight yarn, and you will be making color changes to achieve the sun-ray design effect. Pattern adjustments for sizes small-2x are included.

I'm Abby — mom of three, lifelong crocheter, voracious reader, and aspiring novelist. At some point, I was supposed to grow up ... but so far I still spend most of my time playing with books, paper, and yarn. In my mind, I live a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. My crochet speed is 1 beanie per 2 episodes of The Mandalorian. I'm beyond grateful to work with the team at Happily Hooked, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me!
