When I first received my copy of Huggable Amigurumi by Shannen Nicole Chua, I skimmed through the pages and glanced at each of the designs. Many of them popped out at me because of their creativity and uniqueness. I was immediately impressed. But as I got to the end of the book and read the author’s bio, I was surprised to learn that all of these amazing designs came from a young college student that had been crocheting since the 6th grade. Shannon’s work is fabulous, polished, and professional and I look forward to seeing the success she will have in the future.
I was ready to crochet the Lamb, Moby Whale, and Rocco Racoon right away, but I look forward to crocheting many more of these designs. You’ll be delighted to know that you can use any of your favorite DK or worsted weight yarns for the designs in this book. All of the patterns are animals and so finding an accessible line of yarn with a variety of essential animal colors is more important than matching a specific yarn. Finished projects measure about 6-12” tall and are perfect cuddle toys for kids (and adults too!)
The index has a comprehensive guide to the traditional stitches used in amigurumi as well as any others that are used in the book. For example, the Lamb uses a puff stitch to create the illusion of a coat of wool and that stitch is clearly defined in the index.
But in the end, will you love the patterns? The answer to that is yes. Not only are the instructions clear and concise, the assembly instructions are easy to follow as well. There are stitch counts after each row or round and a list of any additional notions that will be needed to finish any specific pattern, such as safety eyes or stuffing.
Each of the designs in this book will inspire your imagination and allow you to create a beautiful work of art. I was highly impressed with this book! I give it two thumbs up.
