5 FREE Patterns Featuring Gorgeous Crocheted Cables

In August, Happily Hooked released a cables-themed issue of Pattern Pack Pro. It’s such a challenging theme to delve into because so many of us are intimidated by cables.

I’ve personally never had any luck with them until I learned about Infinity Crochet and tried Shawna Underwood’s Briana Bag Design (found in the Cables PPP). Now I’m a total cable convert!

Here are 5 FREE patterns featuring gorgeous crocheted cables!

Textured Twist 12” Afghan Square

This square was originally designed as part of a larger afghan CAL. But if you enjoy combining squares to create your own original work, you’ll love adding this pattern to your library.

At first glance, it’s minimalist look makes it look easy, but it’s actually an intermediate level project containing quite a few special stitches.

What you’ll need:
Red Heart with Love Solids (or other Aran weight yarn)
J (6mm hook)

Kacee Purse

A real standout among bag patterns! This is a small project you could complete in a day. But don’t stray far from the pattern! If you make a mistake in a cable design, it shows.

What you’ll need:
Lion Brand LB Collection Mako Cotton
I (5.5mm) hook
F (3.75mm) hook

2 8-12” wooden purse handles

Oatmeal Cable Slouch Hat

If you use a wool yarn or one with a wool look to it…this hat will look store-bought! I love the knit-alike design that’s instantly familiar. But it also stands out in terms of texture. The cables seem deeper and more fluid than knitted ones.

What you’ll need:
Stylecraft Special Aran with Wool
K (6.5mm) hook
I (5.5mm) hook

Stitch marker
Needle
Pompom

Cable Twist Headband

This headband is so adorable you’re not going to want to stop making it! Very cute, very trendy, perfect for gifting or craft fair inventory.

Plus, if you’re new to cables, it’s a nice, small project to get yourself started. AND there’s even a video tutorial available!

What you’ll need:
Patons Alpaca Blend Yarn
J (6mm) hook

Hygge Chic Crochet Pillow

Our Cables PPP from August includes an interview with Briana K who wanted a crochet cable technique that eliminated the gaps usually created by simple back and front post stitches.

The Infinity Crochet technique makes it possible to start and end cable designs anywhere within a pattern. As a result, we’re able to make stunning designs like this pillow.

The design IS rated “Complex,” so beginners approach with caution. Unless you’re like me and like to skip from beginner to advanced just to keep life interesting. In which case…GO FOR IT!

What you’ll need:
Red Heart Chic Sheep
J (6mm) hook
18”x18” pillow form
